The Storm in Between Separate Sets of Sheets (2012)
Original Story
February 27, 2016
*Originally written May, 2012*
At this point of the collection, we're at the aftermath of the break-up. Closing in on a year afterward, the next several pieces are, by my own somewhat embarrassing admission, pretty depressing and pathetic. I think the works themselves are good, but as I reread them now, I think, "Was I really that down and sad?"
I was.
But moving forward, I'm really proud of this piece. I've always tried to write some that have the first verse mean one thing and then end with the same exact verse, but everything in between changes the meaning of it. You'll see in this piece that slight alteration I made at the end completely makes this standout as one of the better ones in the collection.
It's a song about that isolation one feels after a big piece of their life disappears, sometimes without proper explanation. It is a bitter and jaded song by all accounts, but it's also a good ballad if I do say so myself. Dreary and unsettling because of the need and desire to not be alone.
I'm most proud of the last two lines in this piece. It wraps up the feeling of abandonment and puts a stern message at the end.
Without further adieu:

The Storm in Between Separate Sets of Sheets
Miles away,
The rain pounds our rooftops.
We lie in separate beds
Tossing and turning for different reasons.
Remember the calm that came
Lying between each other’s arms.
Sheets tangled by sunrise
And still hearts and minds until the
Sun sets again?
I just want you to retrace
The memories of
How it felt when our bodies intertwined.
How our eyes never blinked while gazing into the stars.
How that smile of yours was
The truest sign of happiness
You had ever felt.
The truest sign of happiness
I had ever experienced.
Miles away,
The thunder roars
And lightning crashes.
We lie in separate beds
Tossing and turning for different reasons.
I can’t get you off my mind
And you just can’t sleep.
