Spaling, Goc net first Goals as Penguins
October 22, 2014
The Philadelphia Flyers bounced back from a 4-0 shutout the previous night against the Chicago Blackhawks to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 5-3 at the Consol Energy Center.
Three third period goals from the Flyers pushed them to their second victory of the season with the tallies coming from Pittsburgh native R.J. Umberger at 6:50 of the final frame. Exactly two minutes later, a beautiful backhand shot was lifted over the sprawled out Marc-Andre Fleury off of the stick of Matt Read for his first of the season. Sean Couturier capped off the Flyers offensive night with an empty net goal from center ice with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Sandwiched in between the Read and Couturier goals was Marcel Goc's first goal as a Pittsburgh Penguin as he tapped in a pass from Nick Spaling, ricocheting off of the far post past Ray Emery with 2:57 left in the contest.
The Pittsburgh Penguins had started the game off on fire, striking first with a goal from Spaling, who rifled the puck in on the shortside at 3:50. The Flyers would strike back with two tallies from Mark Streit at 9:20 and a tip-in goal off of the rush from rookie Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, his first NHL goal.
Pascal Dupuis would tie the game up in the second period off of a redirect while screening the Flyers' netminder with 11:00 remaining in the middle frame.
Fleury allowed four goals on 32 shots and Emery stopped 22 of 25 Penguins shots.
The Philadelphia Flyers are now 10-1-1 in their last twelve games at Consol Energy Center.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will make a trip to Michigan and face the Detroit Red Wings tomorrow night with a puck drop scheduled for 7:30 P.M. Thomas Griess is expected to get the start and it will be his first between the pipes in the regular season for the Penguins.
