Penguins Fall 5-4 in Shootout
November 21, 2014
The New York Islanders came away with a 5-4 shootout victory at the Consol Energy Center on Friday night, with Kyle Okposo netting the game-winning shootout tally.
With the shootout tied at one after two rounds, Okposo went backhand-forehand and tucked it past the extended leg of Marc-Andre Fleury to propel the Islanders to their 13th victory of the season (13-6-0).
With seven minutes left in the third period, Patric Hornqvist knotted the game up at four with his team leading tenth goal of the season. Evgeni Malkin found the Swedish winger open on the near circle and Hornqvist blew it by Islanders' netminder Chad Johnson on the shortside.
Brandon Sutter opened up the scoring 1:13 into the contest, deflecting a Paul Martin shot between the legs of Johnson to give the Penguins and early 1-0 lead.
The Islanders would answer with three straight goals in a 1:35 time span. At the 8:18 mark, Matt Martin would streak down the nearside and rip a wrist shot past Fleury on the shortside, right above the ankle for his first goal of the season. Twenty-nine seconds later, Nikolai Kulemin would give the Islanders their first lead of the night, sneaking a backhanded shot over the pad and under the glove of Fleury for his fourth goal of the season. Ryan Strome would extend the lead to 3-1, deflecting in a Thomas Hickey point shot off of his right toe past Fleury with 10:07 remaining.
Blake Comeau would bring the Penguins to within one with his fifth goal of the year, wrapping around the Islanders net and throwing the puck in front. With a fortuitous bounce off of Matt Martin's skate, the Penguins headed into the first intermission, trailing by one.
The teams would trade tallies in the second period, with the Islanders recapturing their two goal lead with Nick Leddy's fifth goal of the season. Leddy let go a wrist shot from the top of the far circle and beat Fleury clean to the glove side at 5:42 of the second frame. Nick Spaling would answer at 8:50, tucking in his third goal of the year standing just outside the crease.
Johnson made 26 saves for his fifth win of the season, while Fleury stopped 31 in a losing effort. Malkin had two assists and Islanders' forward Ryan Strome was the number one star of the game with a goal and two assists.
The teams are even on the season series with one win apiece and return to action on Saturday to complete the home-and-home weekend series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
