Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Islanders
Penguins Stifled In Second Game of Home-And-Home
November 22, 2014
The Pittsburgh Penguins scored one goal in a losing effort, falling to the New York Islanders on the road by a score of 4-1 Saturday night. The New York Islanders are currently tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins atop the Metropolitan Division standings with 28 points after sweeping the home-and-home series.
A three goal third period led the Islanders to their second consecutive victory over the Penguins. Islanders' forward Anders Lee tipped-in his third goal of the season at the 3:28 mark to break the 1-1 tie. The Islanders would score two more goals, one from Brock Nelson on the power play and the final goal by the captain, John Taveras with 4:14 remaining in the final period. \
Nelson shuffled the puck into a wide open net, finishing off a beautiful fake shot/pass from Kyle Okposo for his tenth of the season. Taveras' tally, his eighth of the season, was a skilled play in the front of the net, turning a bouncing puck from his backhand to his forehand to extend the Islanders' lead by three goals.
Similar to the game on Friday night, the Penguins would open up the scoring in the first period. Evgeni Malkin, driving towards the net, flicked a wrist shot on Jaroslav Halak that ultimately trickled through the netminder's pads and crossed the goal line. The goal, coming at the 16:49 mark, gave Malkin his eighth of the year and the lone Penguins tally. Assists were awarded to Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling.
Matt Martin would tie the game with his second goal in as many games late in the second period. With less than two minutes to go, Martin would find the loose puck in front of the net and backhand it past Thomas Greiss.
Craig Adams played in his 900th career NHL contest, picking up two shots and one hit in 7:47 of ice time.
Greiss suffered his first regulation loss, stopping 31 shots. Halak, who has won his last six contests allowing only 10 goals during that time, made 26 saves for his ninth win of the season.
The Penguins return to action Monday night as they square off against the Boston Bruins on the road at the TD Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
