Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Winnipeg Jets
Crosby Nets Game-Winner in Shootout
November 6th, 2014
The Pittsburgh Penguins escaped Winnipeg with a shootout victory, winning the contest by a score of 4-3. Goals by Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby in the shootout gave the Penguins their second win on the five game roadtrip and sixth win in a row.
Crosby was the second shooter for the Penguins with the shootout tied at one apiece. Coming down the slot slowly, Crosby deked netminder Ondrej Pavelec several times before tucking the puck inside the far post. Pavelec's swinging leg propelled the puck past the goal line for the deciding goal.
Andrew Ladd broke Marc-Andre Fleury's shutout streak of 164:22 with a tip-in goal from in front of the crease at 9:36 of the first period. Simon Despres would answer 1:40 later with a shot from the point that beat Pavelec on the shortside. The goal was his first of the season and in 71 games.
Tied entering the second period, the Penguins took the lead with Brandon Sutter striking at 6:50, beating Pavelec on the blocker side for his fourth of the season. Sutter would also add two assists on the night, giving him a season high three-point game. After serving a penalty, Steve Downie was released in perfect time to race down into the Jets zone, pick up a loose puck and backhand his third goal of the year with 2:56 remaining in the period. Dustin Byfuglien would check Downie after the goal, stirring up a series off events that would eventually have Downie ejected in the third period. He left the game with one goal, one assist, and 22 PIMs.
Late in the second period, Jets' defenseman Jacob Trouba slapped home his second goal of the year, beating a screened Fleury to the far post to cut the Penguins lead to 3-2 heading into the third period.
Evander Kane would tie the game up at three sprinting towards Fleury all alone and beating him shortside at 3:55 of the third period.
Fleury stopped 34 pucks to earn his eighth win of the season and extend the winning streak. Pavelec faced 35 shots and saved 32 in a losing effort that ends the Jets three game winning streak and puts them at a 5-0-2 record over the last seven contests.
The Penguins return to the East Coast Saturday night as they faceoff with the Buffalo Sabres once more. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
