November 15, 2014
Brandon Sutter's shootout goal in the fourth round provided the Pittsburgh Penguins with the win against the New York Rangers at the Consol Energy Center by a score of 3-2.
In the shootout, Henrik Lundqvist and Marc-Andre Fleury put on a goaltending clinic. Closing out the contest, Rangers' defenseman Dan Boyle had seemingly beat Fleury to give the Rangers the win. However, upon further review, it was deemed that Boyle put the puck in behind the Penguins' netminder on the rebound. The teams were brought back onto the ice where in the following round, Sutter would beat Lundqvist through the five-hole and Fleury robbed Rick Nash with the glove to reverse the game's decision in favor of the Penguins.
Evgeni Malkin's impressive play was noticeable from the start of the game, assisting on Blake Comeau's fourth goal of the year in the first period. Malkin fed the puck to Patric Hornqvist who then slid it over to Comeau at the far circle. Comeau's snapshot found its way through Lundqvist's right side to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 14:12 of the opening frame.
The Rangers would strike twice in the first period, the first goal coming off of the stick of Lee Stempniak fifteen seconds after the Comeau tally. Standing in front of the crease, the puck redirected itself into the open space where Stempniak backhanded the loose puck into the yawning cage.
Martin St. Louis put the Rangers up 2-1 less than two minutes later on the power play, patiently sniping a wrist shot over the fallen Fleury.
Malkin tied the game up at two at 8:09 of the second period, finishing off a two-on-one passing play along with Nick Spaling. After a Rangers turnover in their defensive zone, Spaling stole the puck and fed a wide open Malkin, whose slapshot riccocheted off of the post and Lundqvist's back, bouncing in behind the Rangers goaltender.
The third period was filled with up and down action and extremely physical play, none more than Malkin's hit on defenseman Dan Girardi late in the contest. Playing the puck behind the net, Girardi got his head up just in time to see Malkin coming down hard for the puck. Girardi missed several shifts after the big hit, but did return in the overtime period.
Lundqvist's net mastery was apparent in the overtime, stopping two Penguins' breakaway opportunities by Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang. The key saves pushed the Rangers into the shootout where they originally won the contest, but had to continue on after a video review on the game-winning goal.
Fleury stopped 31 shots for his 10th win on the year, while Lundqvist made saves on 38 of 40 Penguins' shots.
The Pittsburgh Penguins head back on the road and up into Canada as they visit the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
