Dallas Stars vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Stars Strike Twice in Final Minutes to Hand Pens First Loss
October 16, 2014
Two third period goals in a three minute time span by the Dallas Stars propelled them to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center.
Jamie Benn knotted the game up at two after a goal thirty seconds prior was waved off due to goaltender interference. Benn, standing in front of the crease, batted home a Jason Spezza rebound past a sprawled out Marc-Andre Fleury at 17:03 of the third period.
In the dwindling seconds of regulation, Penguins' captain Sidney Crosby took a tripping penalty, sending the Stars to their fourth powerplay of the night. It did not take long for Tyler Seguin to one-time a Spezza feed from the near circle under the blocker of Fleury with three seconds left to go in regulation to put the Stars up for the first time in the contest.
The Penguins came out and dominated play early in the first, capitalizing on their first two powerplay opportunities with goals by Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Crosby's shot from the slot was deflected in off of the stick of Stars' defenseman Jordie Benn under the blocker of Kari Lehtonen at 2:28 of the first period.
Five minutes later, Kunitz roofed a loose puck over Lehtonen's glove to give the Penguins a two goal lead with 12:14 left in the opening frame.
At 6:08 of the middle frame, Antoine Roussel would put the Stars on the board, ripping a wrister past Fleury on the short-side.
Pascal Dupuis left the game just over halfway through the second period after being cross-checked from behind and then taking a slapshot to the back of the neck. He would be carted off on a stretcher, but gave the fans a thumbs up as he left the ice surface.
Fleury stopped 26 of 29 shots in a losing effort, while Lehtonen made 26 saves on the night.
The Penguins return to action on Saturday night as they face the New York Islanders at home. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. and can be seen on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh.
