Anaheim Ducks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Mike Johnston Earns First NHL Coaching Win
October 9, 2014
Pascal Dupuis' four-point night led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks to open up the 2014-15 regular season at the Consol Energy Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dupuis led the team with one goal and three helpers in his first game since December 23 of last year before suffering a torn ACL to end his season. His tally, along with Patric Hornqvist's first as a Penguin and Sidney Crosby's first of the season in the first period propelled the Penguins to an early three goal lead.
New Anaheim centerman Ryan Kesler struck with a quick snapshot shortside against Marc-Andre Fleury on the powerplay at 14:22 of the first period to cut the lead back down to two.
The second period saw a shift in momentum as Corey Perry scored two of his three goals in the middle frame to tie the game at three. With 2:26 left in the period and :54 seconds apart, Sidney Crosby notched his second goal of the night on the powerplay and Blake Comeau one-timed a beautiful pass from Olli Maatta behind Anaheim netminder and Pittsburgh native John Gibson that would turn out to be the game winner.
Brandon Sutter struck short-handed with a nifty forehand-backhand move to regain the three goal lead. Later in the third period, Perry added his hat-trick goal, once again beating Fleury on the powerplay over the blocker side.
Olli Maatta assisted on three Penguins tallies in his first game after off-season shoulder surgery. Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf and Sami Vatenen added two helpers as well.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 of 33 shots while John Gibson allowed six goals on 45 shots.
