pITTSBURGH pENGUINS VS. mONTREAL cANADIENS
Penguins' All-Stars Vital in OT Victory
January 10th, 2015
Fresh off of his fifth All-Star Game selection, Penguins' center Sidney Crosby pushed the Penguins past the Montreal Canadiens with an overtime power play goal to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory.
Shortly after a dominant in-zone shift led by David Perron, the Canadiens were called for a too many men on the ice penalty with 1:51 remaining in the overtime frame. At 3:41 of overtime, Evgeni Malkin slid the puck into Crosby's wheelhouse, who buried the snapshot behind Carey Price for his 12th goal of the season.
Montreal's Max Pacioretty opened up the scoring late in the first period, capping off a two-on-one rush by snapping a wrist shot over the glove hand on the shortside of Marc-Andre Fleury.
The Penguins would knot the game up at one in the second period with an Evgeni Malkin slapshot goal with 1:32 remaining in the middle frame. Malkin, who was also named to his fifth All-Star Game earlier in the day, took the feed from Simon Despres and blasted the puck past the glove hand of a screened Price.
The third period and opening minutes of overtime featured ample opportunities for both teams who were just unable to convert on those chances. Fleury backstopped the Penguins to victory with 27 saves for his 21st victory of the season. Price gave up two goals on 37 shots for only his second overtime defeat.
Pittsburgh looks to continue the momentum as they square off against the Minnesota Wild Tuesday night, with a 7:00 P.M. scheduled puck drop. The game can be seen on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh and NBC Sports Network.
