Los Angeles Kings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Malkin Picks up 400th Career Assist in Victory
October 30th, 2014
Marc-Andre Fleury backstopped the Penguins to a 3-0 win over the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings at the Consol Energy Center. The shutout was Fleury's 30th of his career and second in three games.
Fleury's shutout was the first against the Kings, dating back to November 23rd, 1974.
The Pittsburgh Penguins powerplay was on display once again, scoring twice on six opportunities. Goals from Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang in the first period set the pace for contest. Kunitz redirected an Evgeni Malkin pass into the back of the net for his fourth of the season at 9:16 of the opening frame. Malkin collected his 400th career assist on the play and continued his nine game point streak (4G, 8A).
Letang would extend the Penguins lead to two as an errant pass from his stick clipped a sliding Kings' defenseman and trickled past Kings' netminder Martin Jones. The goal was Letang's first of the year and only the second goal scored by a Penguins' blueliner all season.
Kunitz would net his second goal of the game, capping off a tremendous shift from the Penguins ripping a wrist shot from a sharp angle underneath the crossbar at 9:24 of the third period.
The Los Angeles Kings outshot the Penguins 36 to 23, with Jones stopping 20 of the shots. This marks the first time this season that the Penguins have won a game despite being outshot.
The Buffalo Sabres come into Pittsburgh Saturday November 1st, with a puck drop scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
