November 4, 2014
The Pittsburgh Penguins extended their win streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on the road at the Xcel Energy Center. The win puts a blemish on Minnesota's undefeated at home record. Thomas Greiss made 34 saves in the winning effort.
Brandon Sutter's goal at 2:08 of the second period proved to be the game winner as he streaked down the far side and with pinpoint accuracy, wristed a shot to the far post under the blocker and above the pad of Wild netminder Darcy Kuemper.
With 4:27 remaining in the second, Chris Kunitz redirected an Evgeni Malkin point shot on the Penguins first powerplay of the night under the crossbar to extend the Penguins lead to three at that point. Malkin's assist was his 11th in as many games and extends his point streak to 11 games (5G, 11A).
Just over halfway through the third period, Nino Niederreiter scored shorthanded, going forehand-backhand on the breakaway to give the Wild their only goal of the night. The goal ends Pittsburgh's 18 unanswered goals streak, a record that dates back to the 2000-01 season. It also ended the Penguins' 205:28 shutout streak, stemming back to their contest with the New Jersey Devils last week.
What appeared to be a Mikku Koivu tally late in the third was called off due to goaltender interference. The Wild, pulling their goaltender with 2:07 remaining would allow an empty goal to Patric Hornqvist, his seventh of the season. Sidney Crosby assisted on the marker, giving him his 19th point on the season (7G, 12A), reclaiming the lead league in points from Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek.
Nick Spaling scored his second of the year with 54 seconds remaining in the first period after a very defensive first 20 minutes, elevating the puck over the fallen Kuemper to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. Steve Downie feathered a pass through the defender where an open Spaling potted home the puck.
Greiss put up a .971 save percentage in the contest that earned him his first victory with the Penguins this season in his second start. Kuemper made 19 saves in the losing effort.
Pittsburgh improves their record to 8-2-1 while Minnesota falls to 7-3-1.
The Penguins continue their roadtrip this Thursday as the square off against the Winnipeg Jets with a puck drop scheduled for 8:00 P.M.
