Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Montreal Canadiens
Bennett's Three-Point Night Helps Pens Shut Out Habs
November 18, 2014
Beau Bennett's three-point night helped lead the Pittsburgh Penguins past the NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens by a score of 4-0 on the road. Bennett's goal and two assists, along with Marc-Andre Fleury's 32nd career shutout and fourth of the season pushed the Penguins' record to 13-3-1.
Bennett would score his first goal of the season at 7:46 of the first period, stealing a pass at the attacking blueline and ripping a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Carey Price. He would add an assist less than two minutes later, passing the puck to a wide-open Kris Letang after battling along the boards. Letang, patiently skating towards the goal, fed a perfect pass to the stick of Steve Downie who glided the puck past Price for his third goal of the season.
The Penguins, leading 2-0 after the first period, would add that to mark less than a minute in the second period. Bennett, once again working down low, spotted an open Brandon Sutter in the slot. Sutter whipped a wrist shot under the crossbar and over the glove of the Canadiens' netminder for his fifth of the season. Downie would pick up the secondary assist.
Closing out the second period, Sidney Crosby would pot home his eighth goal of season and first in as many games on the Penguins' only power play opportunity of the night. After a scrum in front of the crease, a fortuitous bounce off of Evgeni Malkin's right skate landed on Crosby's stick in the crease as Crosby easily put the puck in the net to give the Penguins a 4-0 heading into the third period.
Facing a barrage of shots in the third period, Fleury stopped all 27 shots thrown his way to pick up his fourth shutout of the season. The win marked his eighth in his last nine games and pushed him to within one win from 300 career victories.
Price stopped 18 in a losing effort.
The Penguins return home Friday to set up a home-and-home weekend match-up with the New York Islanders. The Penguins defeated the Islanders in their first meeting this season on October 18th by a score of 3-1.
Both games can be viewed on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh and are scheduled for a 7:00 P.M. puck drop.
