Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Evgeni Malkin's Three Point Night Sparks Penguins Offense
October 11, 2014
Three first period goals by Patric Hornqvist, Sidney Crosby, and Chris Kunitz led the Pittsburgh Penguins to their second win in as many games, on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs by a 5-2 score.
Hornqvist notched his second goal of the season springing off of the bench in the middle of a line change, driving the net and snapping the puck between the legs of Leafs' goaltender Jonathan Bernier at the 6:44 mark of the first period. Crosby netted his third of the season on the powerplay, redirecting a shot off of the boards from Kris Letang behind the netminder one minute later. Kunitz tipped in the eventual game-winning goal on the Penguins' second powerplay of the night under the right pad of Bernier.
Toronto's Joffrey Lupul broke the shutout in the second period by guiding in a pass from Morgan Rielly from the slot over the glove of Penguins' netminder Marc-Andre Fleury at the 4:18 mark of the middle frame. Penguins' center/right winger Evgeni Malkin answered with a powerplay goal of his own, ripping a wrist shot to the top left corner to regain a Penguins' three goal lead.
Both teams traded goals in the third period with Brandon Sutter scoring his second goal of the year from three feet outside of the crease at 8:26 and Toronto's Tyler Bozak blistered a wide open wrist shot past Fleury over a minute later from the slot on the powerplay.
Hornqvist led all skaters in shots tonight with a game high nine and added an assist.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 of 25 shots, while Jonathan Bernier allowed five goals on 41 Penguins' shots.
The Penguins fly back to Pittsburgh for a three game home stand, starting with the Dallas Stars on Thursday, October 16. Puck drop at 7:00 P.M.
