Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers
Beau Bennett Makes Season Debut in 5-0 Loss
November 11, 2014
The Pittsburgh Penguins three game winning streak on the road, and seven game win streak ended abruptly in Madison Square Garden as the New York Rangers shutout the Penguins by a score of 5-0 Tuesday night. Henrik Lundqvist backstopped the Rangers' for his third shutout of the season.
With a gameday roster change for the Pittsburgh Penguins, scratching Zach Sill in favor for the newly recalled right winger Beau Bennett, the team could not generate any offense against a stingy New York Rangers defensive team. Bennett had 9:35 of ice time and recorded one shot along with three hits, putting up a minus-1 on the night.
The Rangers came strong against the Penguins, scoring three goals in the first period and not looking back once. The scoring spree began with Mats Zucarello as he snapped a wrist shot off of a face-off win past Marc-Andre Fleury at 8:23 for his third of the season. Just over two and half minutes later, Martin St. Louis potted home his fifth goal of the year with 9:01 remaining in the opening period. Rangers' defenseman Kevin Klein would add to the offense, bombing a slapshot from the point past three Penguins' defenders and Fleury with 5:13 to go in the first.
Derick Brassard would find his name on the score sheet as well, ending the Penguins' 39 consecutive penalty kills streak with a wicked wrist shot from the left wing boards, beating Fleury to the gloveside. Brassard walked in uncontested off of the far boards and picked his spot to put the Rangers up 4-0 with 9:11 to go in the middle frame.
Rick Nash, the NHL's leading goal scorer, added a short-handed goal in the third period, backhanding the puck between the legs of Fleury at 7:45 for his 12th goal of the season.
Lundqvist stopped all 33 shots faced while Fleury allowed five goals on 35 shots. The contest marked the first time the Penguins had allowed five goals in a game all season and the first time they had lost on the road in regulation (5-1-1).
The Penguins record suffers it's first loss in seven contests, reading 10-3-1, while the New York Rangers improve to 7-6-2.
Pittsburgh wraps up it's five-game roadtrip by visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday, November 14 with a puck drop scheduled for 7:00 P.M. The Penguins then come home Saturday to face the New York Rangers in their second match-up in five days.
