Illusion of Night (2014)

This piece is short and sweet. It's a very visual piece and kind of an insight into my restless mind. "Illusion of Night" is a way of describing my way of thinking. Just because it's dark outside doesn't mean my mind turns off. To put it blatantly, I don't see night and day. I see a continuous timeframe, hence the illusion.
Title aside, the lyric was originally the first three lines. I had written them months prior and liked where it was going, but was stuck. One day after work, several months later, I found a piece of folded paper on my nightstand and read it. It was those three lines and it consumed me for the rest of the night as I stared at them until I decided to turn off my light and fall asleep.
During that night, I had a dream of me trying to grab out and hold onto this figure in a white dress. When I closed my hand, my palm was covered in blood. I awoke and reached over to my left, grabbing my pen and scribbled down a shortened version of my dream. The point of the last two lines was meant to be somewhat religious in context, however I myself am not. I hate to admit it, but I also wrote those lines "because I thought they were cool."
The middle section of the song is what it is. Somewhat cliche, but it sets the tone for the concluding lines. I particularly like the imagery and the deeper context of the song, if one thinks about it for a while. (Remember, in Common's 'I Used to Love HER,' "HER" represented hip-hop. This "her" can represent whatever we want it to.)
Without further adieu:

Illusion of Night
Full moon;
The wolves were singing
And the owls at a hush.
I moved to grasp her.
Heart pounding; intense rush.
And right when I had her in my hands, in my arms,
I hugged a ghost;
Middle nail pierced my palm,
But I’m no savior.

I moved to grasp her.

And right when I had her in my hands, in my arms,

But I’m no savior.
