We Are What We Are
We Are What We Are is an American remake of the Spanish horror film, Somos Lo Que Hay, released in 2013. The American film was opened in theaters for a limited release and then went to DVD shortly after.
The premise of the film is about a family that has a secret and has to do whatever they can to protect their name in a small town. The matriarch of the Parker family tragically passes away on a routine trip to the market, forcing her two daughters Iris and Rose, and young son, Rory, to cope with the tragedy, but also carry on the family tradition.
Their father is deeply tormented by the passing of his wife and the carrying on of their legacy. He does whatever it takes to make sure his family is safe from the outsiders. Frank Parker cares only about his family and the Lord, creating a dangerous man when one challenges those two priorities.
The Parker's secret, however, is one of a macabre nature. They are not vampires, they are not werewolves, they are not voodoo children; their ritual is much more disturbing....and filling.
The actors and actresses in this film put on fantastic performances. Bill Sage is bone chilling and mesmerizing in the role of Frank. Julie Garner (Rose) and Ambyr Childers (Iris) steal the film as the daughters of the Parker family with powerful, engaging performances.
The Parker's simply are what they are.
