Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Penguins Suffer First Back-To-Back Regulation Losses on the Year
December 27, 2014
The Pittsburgh Penguins fell to the Washington Capitals, 3-0, at home with two goals by Eric Fehr and one tally by Marcus Johannson. The loss signifies Pittsburgh's first back-to-back regulation losses of the season, running their record to 22-8-5; Washington improved their overall record to 17-11-6.
With 2:13 remaining in the opening frame, Eric Fehr would chip a loose puck in the crease over Marc-Andre Fleury's right pad for his eighth goal of the season. After that first goal, the Capitals would not look back and hold the Penguins to 31 shots on the night. Braden Holtby would notch his third shutout of the season.
The Capitals would add two more third period goals, the first of which coming from the stick of Marcus Johansson. Following a dominant offensive zone display of puck control and movement, the Penguins found themselves trapped as the Capitals led a two-on-one rush, capped off by a Johansson wrist shot that beat Fleury under the blocker arm to the far post for his tenth of the year.
At the 10:16 mark, Fehr would bookend the night with his ninth of the goal, pushing a knuckling puck past a down and out Fleury.
Fleury stopped 31 shots in route to his fifth regulation loss of the season.
The Penguins return to action Monday as they square off with another division foe, the New Jersey Devils on the road. Puck drop scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
