Pittsburgh Penguins vs. BUffalo Sabres
Crosby's Five-Point Night Extends Win Streak
November 8, 2014
Sidney Crosby's five assist night led the Penguins to a dominant 6-1 victory on the road against the Buffalo Sabres, extending their winning streak to seven straight. This marks the second win in one week against the Sabres, who fall to 3-11-2 on the season.
Crosby would get his night started early on in the first period setting up a give-and-go with Kris Letang, who would blister a shot past Jhonas Enroth 1:21 into the contest. Just over two minutes later, Patric Hornqvist would redirect a Kris Letang point shot on the powerplay for his eighth of the season and Crosby's second assist on the night.
Letang would strike one more time with 4:56 remaining in the opening frame, wiring a slapshot from the point to beat Enroth on the gloveside to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Crosby would register his second secondary assist of the night on Letang's fourth goal of the season.
The onslaught continued, as the Penguins would put up three more goals. Hornqvist ripped home his second on the powerplay, and ninth of the season, at 4:56 after finishing a tic-tac-toe passing play with Crosby feeding the puck down low to Chris Kunitz who snapped it to Hornqvist in the slot. Robert Bortuzzo would score his first goal in 58 games gliding through the offensive zone, waiting for the right opportunity and slipping a shot by a scrambling Enroth. Crosby's fifth assist on Bortuzzo's goal gave the Penguins a 5-0 lead with 5:59 remaining in the period.
Buffalo would get on the board late in the middle frame, as Zemgus Girgensons deflected a puck behind Marc-Andre Fleury shortly after a powerplay had expired. It was Buffalo's first goal against the Penguins this season in 96:52.
With only 45 seconds remaining in the period, the Penguins would score once more with Blake Comeau assisting on Evgeni Malkin's first even strength goal of the season and his sixth of the season.
Crosby now has a two point lead over Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek (24, 22 respectively) for the league lead.
Fleury was solid in net despite a relatively uneventful night, stopping 20 of 21 shots. Enroth allowed six goals on 39 shots to drop his second game against the Penguins in seven days.
The Penguins (10-2-1) continue on their roadtrip Tuesday night as they square off against the New York Rangers, the team that eliminated them from the 2013 Playoffs and eventually made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. on Veteran's Day.
