Crosby Notches 500th Assist in Victory
October 18, 2014
Two second period powerplay goals by the Pittsburgh Penguins led them to victory over the undefeated New York Islanders at the Consol Energy Center by a score of 3-1.
At 13:49, Evgeni Malkin tied the game up at one whipping a wrist shot past the blocker side of Islanders' netminder Jaroslav Halak for his second goal of the season. Malkin would then, 55 seconds later, drive a slapshot on net that was tipped in by the screening Patric Hornqvist high to the blocker side once again to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. It was Hornqvist's third goal of the season.
Islander's defenseman Thomas Hickey opened up the scoring with his first goal of the season, joining the rush and capping off a tic-tac-toe passing play with a wrist shot to the shortside of Marc-Andre Fleury at 5:46 of the first period. Assists are attributed to Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson.
Sidney Crosby would reach a milestone, assisting on Hornqvist's second goal of the night and fourth of the season, by feeding the puck to Chris Kunitz who then flipped it to open space. Hornqvist, streaming down the middle of the ice, glided the puck into the empty net. The secondary assist was Crosby's 500th in his NHL career.
Fleury stopped 35 shots against, while Halak allowed two goals on 39 shots.
The Penguins are now 3-1-0, handing the Islanders their first loss of the season (4-1-0).
