New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Crosby Nets Two as Pens Runaway with Victory
October 28, 2014
After falling behind 3-1 with 14:46 remaining in the second period, the Pittsburgh Penguins would score seven unanswered goals at the Consol Energy Center to comeback and defeat the New Jersey Devils by a score of 8-3 Tuesday night.
The comeback began at 8:56 of the second period with an Evgeni Malkin 5-on-3 powerplay goal. His slapshot ricocheted off of the crossbar, past Devils' netminder Cory Schneider to pull the Penguins within in one. That goal marked his fourth of the season, all on the powerplay. At 12:42, Simon Despres banked a pass off of the far boards and caught a streaking Patric Hornqvist in stride. His snapshot from the far circle would beat Schneider over the shoulder on the shortside to tie the game at three.
With 2:25 remaining in the period and after killing a Devils' powerplay, Craig Adams was sprung from the penalty box and scored on a breakaway, lifting his forehand shot over the glove of Schneider to tally his first goal in 12 games. Just over one minute later, Despres would fling a puck on net that fortuitously bounced to a wide open Sidney Crosby who planted the puck behind the sprawled out Schneider for his sixth goal of the season to give the Penguins a two goal lead heading into the third.
The momentum continued for the home team as three more goals were scored in the final 20 minutes, two of which were powerplay goals. Pascal Dupuis rifled a wrist shot on the shortside over the shoulder of newly inserted goaltender Scott Clemmensen at 5:29 in the third period. Steve Downie would score his first goal as a Penguin, sliding the puck underneath the blocker of Clemmensen with 6:13 remaining in regulation. Crosby capped off the scoring with his second of the game, blistering a slapshot past the Devils' backup netminder, unassisted, at 16:40.
The New Jersey Devils struck early on in the contest as Dainius Zubrus beat Marc-Andre Fleury with a wrist shot to the gloveside just nine seconds into the contest for his second of the season. Blake Comeau would answer with his second of the year with a backhand goal of his own, capitalizing off of a Schneider turnover from behind the goal.
Jacob Joesefson regained the Devils lead, 2-1, in the second period, scoring with a backhand on a breakaway shorthanded for his first goal of the season. Tuomo Ruutu put the Devils up by two tapping in a rebound at 5:14 of the middle frame.
The Penguins jump over the Devils in the standings, moving into the third spot in the conference with their fifth win on the season (5-2-1), while the Devils fall to tenth in the Eastern Conference (4-3-2).
Fleury stopped 16 of 19 shots, while Schneider was pulled after the second period allowing five goals on 23 shots.
The Pittsburgh Penguins welcome the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings into the Consol Energy Center on Thursday, October 30 with a 7:00 P.M. puck drop.
