The Lifeguard
The Lifeguard is a 2013 romantic drama starring Kristen Bell, Martin Starr, and Mamie Gummer, set in a quiet Connecticut town. Leigh (Bell) moves back home with her parents after quitting her job as a reporter in busy New York City. Upon returning, the 29 year old takes back her old high school job as the community lifeguard. She meets up with Mel (Gummer) and Todd (Starr) and they relive their glory days from high school.
While Leigh is lifeguarding the pool, the son of the owner, Jason (David Lambert), begins to hang around with his friend Matt (Alex Shaffer). Soon, Leigh is captivated by Jason and the two generations of high school friends begin to form a friendship.
Jason and Leigh's, however, crosses the friendship boundary and into a taboo love affair. Lines are crossed, friendships and relationships are tested and life can not be put on hold anymore for Leigh. This film is filled with gut wrenching emotion, dramatic tension, and tough decisions for the central characters.
I don't want to spoil this film for anyone who hasn't seen it, but this film hits hard mentally and emotionally. The characters are likable and draw you in with captivating performances. Bell was absolutely perfect; she was born for this role. Arguably my favorite film of 2013. The Lifeguard can be seen on Netflix and also purchased on DVD.
