Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings
Maatta Scores First Goal of The Year
October 23, 2014
The Detroit Red Wings roared back late in the third period and won in overtime by a score of 4-3 over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Joe Louis Arena. Justin Abdelkader netted the winner with just 44 seconds left.
Abdelkader capitalized on a turnover forced by Henrik Zetterberg behind the Penguins net by snapping the puck past the blocker of Thomas Greiss and into the net to give the Red Wings the victory.
With 2:39 left in the third period, the Red Wings pulled goaltender Jimmy Howard in order to bring out the extra attacker. The strategy proved to work, as Zetterberg split the defense and ripped a wicked wrist shot high to the glove side of Penguins' netminder Thomas Greiss to bring the game within one.
Two minutes later, Pavel Datsyuk laid the puck in an open area where Niklas Kronwall blasted home his second goal of the game to tie the contest up at three.
The Penguins had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Pascal Dupuis and Olli Maatta in the first period. Dupuis finished off a two-on-one rush alongside Blake Comeau by blowing a snap shot past Howard on the blocker side at 5:12 of the opening frame. Maatta would score the first goal by a defenseman for the Penguins this season slipping out of a check by Datsyuk and sneaking a backhand shot between the wickets of the Detroit netminder at 11:06.
Kronwall would cut the lead down to one, dekeing his was past Patric Hornqvist and then sniping a wrist shot past a screened Greiss with five minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Chris Kunitz would restore the two goal lead with a powerful wrist shot from inside the near circle at 8:29 of the second period, beating Howard on the far side.
Greiss stopped 27 of 31 shots in his Penguins' debut and Howard made 23 saves on 26 shots. This marks the second game in a row where the Penguins were outshot.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will return to action Saturday night on the road as they visit former teammate James Neal and the Nashville Predators with a puck drop scheduled for 8:00 P.M.
