Midnight Murmurs and Pinky Promises (2011)
Original Story
February 23, 2016
*Originally written February, 2011*
One of the more emotional songs of the collections, "Midnight Murmurs and Pinky Promises" is a piece as cheesy as it gets. And that was the point.
I challenged myself to write as sappy a love song as I could. The only real truth to this piece, as it related to the relationship at the time, was the portion of the two of us lying in bed and her simply asking the question of whether or not I believed in God. Everything surrounding it was what I hoped to hear at one point, but of course did not. Heard a variation that's eluded to in "To Madison" but we'll get there soon.
I had hummed the title of this piece countless times in the months leading up to its creation and thought that it was a clever little thing. And one day, in class, like most of these pieces, I wrote this down instead of taking notes. At the time, I was infatuated with The Saddest Landscapes' "He Died Among Dreams" song, where Andy Maddux screams the song like he was reading a story. "She said, 'you've got the cutest cheekbones I've ever seen. Built up strong from catching a lifetime of tears.'" is just an example. The whole song is told through the third person perspective. I switched up my presentation a bit, while staying somewhat true to the original inspiration of the piece.
This, similar to another piece I've put up on the site, "The Ballad of Brendan Wayne and Mikela Austen", was sung to my girlfriend at the time and delivered the same results; happy tears. It was a long, long song. Five minutes or so I stretched it out to. Thanks for listening as long as you did.
Again, sappy as sap can get with cliches abound, but it fits in with the desire of the relationship at the time, balanced with some true aspects, and that blind elation I spoke of some time ago. Midnight murmurs and pinky promises are sometimes substituted nowadays as vows and they shouldn't be, as played out through the rest of this collection.
Without further adieu:

Without further adieu:
Midnight Murmurs and Pinky Promises
Softly stroking my face, she talked in a daze
“Lull me to sleep with words so beautiful and frail
That they would break with the slightest hint of insincerity.
Embrace me like you do your desires
And never let me go like your dreams.
Caress me with a touch so soft and pure
It’ll paralyze me in ecstasy.
Stare at me with purpose in your eyes
And we’ll alternate blinks so we never lose sight of one another.”
She drew closer to me,
Our hearts harmonizing.
Tangled limbs under bunched up sheets,
She continues to speak.
“Kiss me with lips so tender and full,
We’ll feel our love with every press
And give in to its power.
Tell me stories of your past
So I feel as though I’ve known you forever.
Laugh and sing with me as if we’re the only two people alive;
Capture every moment we share
With photos and mental snapshots,
Pens and videos; whatever you can so you never forget us.”
She paused, pulled my face closer to hers.
Our breath dancing a sleepwalk tango.
She whispered, out of the blue,
“Do you believe in God?”
And I thought:
Every second I’m with her,
Every memory made,
I do.
I was blessed with an angel;
A glowing beam from her every smile,
A choir of perfection when she speaks.
I finally spoke:
“I promise you everything you asked and more,
Just promise me forever, please.”
“I promise,” we said in unison
And with a united tear,
We sealed it with a kiss.
Midnight murmurs and pinky promises,
This is how one loves another.
